I appreciate the feedback on winter driving experience so maybe this year I don't buy a snow wheel/tire set; Not buying and using the new all weather tires for the first winter gives me time to sell off a set of my 9-5 17" winter wheel/tires. What it will come down to is my wife's needs i.e., she is more conservative and will err on the side of safety. A reason I married her and why I am still here for without her I never would have a SAAB so when that tractor trailer truck hit us I would have died. But that is another story!
1) XWD cornering: There is a 90 degree challenging corner close to my house that at times requires one to power corner to minimize the danger of the car behind you rear ending you or passing you into the intersection as on coming traffic just has to cut you off because you used your blinker and cars coming out of the right hand turn just have to cut you off cutting in front of the car that is illegaly passing you in the the intersection. In the 2002 9-5 Aero it is a go in at 30 and come out at 40 sensing this is the best it can do and know the tires are good as are the shocks. In the XWD it is go in at 45 and come out at 55 and know it can do better. Last night my son said "You are just having a ball driving this car aren't you." as we came out of the corner.
2) Tires: I got the 19" wheel package, because that is how it came, but no way will i buy 19" snows. I will look to right size the snows to manage the cost and part of right sizing is using Tirerack or something similar. I went this route with the set I have to sell for the 2003 9-5 Aero that I traded in on the new XWD 9-5 Aero.
3) Winter driving: The driver and the driver's decisions matter far more than the tires or how many wheels are driving the car forward. I have never gotten stuck in my SAAB or my Dodge caravan but I have had to drive around many SUVs and 4 wheel drive vehicles that were stuck and stuck because the driver thought they were bullet proof and could go anywhere at any speed.
