Good Discussion. The 100% proper way is to do your repairs (Shocks / Springs/ Bushings) whatever, put the strut's back in. Take measurements, order lifts as needed and put in. This does take an extra on and off. You can guess. Very generally 1" for sedans and 1.5" for wagons.
Now for a few comments
1) I will not order / use any more OEM springs from Saab / GM. Had to replace lifts from 1" to 1.5" in 2001 Aero Sedan after about 10k. One could argue the bushings "got more bad" after 10k, but .5" is hard to explain that way. Only thing left is the spring.
2) Bushings are optional, but will improve ride height. More cost / time, etc. I have not done this yet on 10+ cars. Some swear by this though.....
3) Align after ride height is brought back to spec.
4) Rotate tires about every 5K from to back. I did not on 2001 Aero and had a little bit of a wine on the tires when put on front due to the spring "let down". It was VERY hard to see the cupping on the back insides. They are quieting down now.
