Help! Key stuck in ignition; won't turn off! Posted by TonyJ [Email] (#407) [Profile/Gallery] (more from TonyJ) on Sat, 7 Jan 2012 16:05:52 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
2004 aero auto runs and drives fine, but the key won't come out and the radio stays on. The key doesn't seem to turn quite all the way CCW to the lock position. Lately, the radio was sometimes staying on after the key was removed; that may be related. I tried lubricating the lock cylinder, as suggested in earlier posts, but that made no difference. I took apart the console, but can't get the top off because the key is in the way. I can barely see that there is mechanical linkage from the key to the shifter mechanism; there is a part that slides up and down about 1/4" as you turn the key. In the up position, with the key turned CW, it slides a pin into the path of the shifter release, but doesn't seem to do anything. I think it is related to the interlock that only lets you remove the key when it's in Park. I tried moving it up and down, but that didn't release the key.
I can see a nearby white plastic part (seems solenoid activated) move up and down a bit if you brake while in Park, but it doesn't seem to do anything. I think it is related to the interlock that only lets you move it out of park when the brake is applied, but there is nothing stopping the shifter from moving in its current condition. There is a small emergency release button next to the shift lever that also moves it.
HOW DO I GET THE KEY OUT? Any help will be appreciated.
