Too many question marks to be able to give a straight answer better than the mechanic that actually looked at it.
It all comes down to how far the car was driven with low or no coolant in system.
I have a 02 V6 sitting here now that is not worth taking the heads off due to that it was driven too far with no coolant. Just the visual look, smell of engine and that it is not capable of starting up tells me the overheat session has been to great and most likely the piston rings has taken damage as well.
If oil cooler failure, it comes down to how long the car has been driven with the failed oil cooler and how serious the coolant and oil has been whipped to a froth and clogged all ports throughout the engine and radiator.
This is what an radiator can look like after several hours spent blowing boiling water and soda through it and system filled up with water and detergent 2 times and drive hard on the freeway trying to dissolve the sludge.
I will never again try to rescue a radiator back to life if the oil cooler has been allowed to do this.
So there are many factors to take into consideration and also the shop and owners willingness to try to do it on the cheap with no warranties if it will work.
Because that is what it comes down to. Is the customer willing to spend $2000.00-3000.00 on a chance doing the head gaskets, oil cooler, radiator and all hoses and after the job it turns out that the car in fact needs another engine.
