I replaced the water pump on our 99 9-5 2.3t in December - the leak was the O-ring to the block. I installed Viton (carbon-filled, black) O-rings on both ends of the connector pipe. Sizes cited here seem correct, but I had a limited selection, and may not have had the correct series (first number of 3 digits) - so though I had -X21 O-rings, they were a little large in cross-section diameter. I sanded them lightly after installed on the pipe, so that they would just barely compress enough to fit into the block and the pump.
Since my experiment is only just underway, feedback will take a while. We definitely get cold enough here in Minnesota to test whether low temp limits will be an issue (I expect it will not, and not so far). We are at 183k miles and I hope to run it another 50k at least - will monitor and report back.
