Unfortunately this is a sad situation for most of the new generation cars.
For example, a timing belt change for a late model VW Passat, requires the removal of the whole front of the car to get access to it. This applies to the water pump too. The estimated time is quoted at about 7.5 hours labor and parts.
Go figure how much this will cost for labor and parts if done through a dealer. If you drive a late model car ,Saab or whatever, be prepared to folk out the cash. This is the new business model on how to extort from the customer like with a gun to his head. The mechanic cannot be totally blamed for this outrage. Blame the car designer.
Its bad I know ,but what can we do about it ? Almost nothing except dont drive and take public transportation.
