outside edge wear is normal for a c900 (especially if the driver likes to corner hard), but the 9-5 is different... though I think a fair number of fwd cars will slowly wear the outsides first. I would first check the alignment (good anyway on the 9-5). Also check tire pressure - make sure you aren't driving around with too little air.
How much tread depth is left in the middle of the tire? It sounds though like you've experienced this rapidly + sounds a bit like my experience on the inside, which would suggest an alignment issue, probably the result of something else... I thought they normally eat the insides if it's just the shock/spring/height camber/toe issue... one of my fronts wore right through to the belts on the inside edge in <5000 miles! was lucky it went flat in the driveway + didn't blow out on the highway...
