In my '01 SE it had the walnut dash. The clear coat on the bezel around the shifter scratched easily. Like fine micro-scratches that just made it look dull.
The "aluminum" is just plastic and will scratch if you try to scratch it. But its matte finish does a good job of hiding the little tiny scratches that would make the wood appear dull.
Oh and it doesn't appear to be painted... I have one pretty deep scratch in mine and the material under the surface is grey/silver. So you don't get a big black scratch. I'm not sure if the '06+ stuff is made the same way though, as they're different shapes. They may have changed the manufacturing method along the way.
