I'm resigned to the fact that I need a new brake booster, and I'm sure that it is failing to release pressure because it's full of oil, but don't want to go ahead until I'm pretty sure I've eliminated the oil.
Here's the chronology again, with dates:
May 28, 2011: installed salvaged brake booster, was informed that old one was full of oil and that new one would fill as well unless I updated the PCV system. The original, however, had failed in that it provided no boost whatsoever, not brakes dragging problem.
September 21, 2011: updated PCV system at SAAB dealer PCV Kit # 55561200 plus assorted other hoses and valves. Brake booster was making slight hissing noise at this time, but decided to not replace until total failure, as the brakes seemed to function fine.
March, 2011: Noticed brakes locking up occasionally, increasing in severity up to today. i would call this total failure.
NOW, saabsite tech says oil is coming from engine, and need to install kit 55561200, which was already done last fall. So...could the oil be from the 5 months I ran with salvaged booster and no PCV update? Or could it be the vacuum pump (the one that runs off the cam shaft) is leaking oil?
This is all complicated by the fact that I want to buy a pickup and have decided to not keep this SAAB long term.
