thick, very white smoke that hangs in the air is oil burning on a hot surface, like when a turbo oil seal goes, and oil gets into the turbine, or oil is leaking from the head (valves) into the exhaust manifold.
Greyer, wispy smoke that dissipates is steam from coolant, which could indicate a head gasket or other problems potentially more serious.
A bad PCV system will not - by itself - cause these symptoms, and "fixing" the PCV will not cure them. A bad PCV that goes for a long time leads to potentially very bad things happening inside the motor.
