But, normally you don't buy just an ammeter. You will want to get a VOM (Volt Ohm Meter) that has at least a 10 Amp range. Ideally you want a digital VOM that has a separately fused jack for amps and is autoranging (changes the scale according to the current drawn).
The best way to do it is to disonnect the negative lead to the battery, connect one lead of the meter to the the cable, touch the cable to the battery, connect the other meter lead to battery while the cable is still touching the post, then remove the cable from the post.
Why so complicated? When you first connect the circuit there is a big inrush of current until all the computers and lighting circuits come up to speed. Depending on the meter and the current, this could overload the meter and damage it.
