CPS replacement is a rite of passage for 9-5 owners. I did mine from the top just as you describe. I used a wood block to seat the sensor. I also did the recon on the line routing back to the connector at the end of the head. The metal clip on the coolant pipe is blind but pretty easy to do. Typical symptom for many is failure to start when hot.
