with the ZF 6-speed auto (with paddle shifters on the wheel), it's a very quick car. It's much better off the line than my '07 9-5 Aero estate, especially with the AWD providing traction. The N55 engine in the new 135i ('11+) doesn't have twin turbos, it has a single turbo with twin scrolls (two inlets for the turbo to take in air). The '08-'10 models have the N54 engine (same as my 335), the N54 has two separate turbochargers, the N54 can be tuned for more hp because of this. I prefer the sound of the N54 to the N55, I've had a few loaner cars with the N55 engine.
I love the 1 series chassis, I had a 120d rental car in England recently and I loved that engine with the 1 series.
The 1 series is quite a bit smaller though than a 9-5, I often find myself taking the Saab because the ride is so much better. The 9-5 Aero has pretty comparable 40-70 acceleration to the BMW as well, and gets much better fuel economy.
