Use of premium fuel only and substitution of the diesel engine inlet snorkel for the smaller diameter early gas engine model helped significantly with my old car. Even with these changes I still noticed sluggishness off the line at high temps.
The 2006 and later models have a much improved air inlet system so changes there should not make much difference. Unless some road debris, such as a scrap of paper or such, got sucked into the system and is partially blocking either the inlet or discharge of the air filter box.
My 2008 had handled the 100+ degree temperatures here in Michigan this summer without a complaint. The 2000 would get a little doggy above 85 degrees.
