Considering replacing the hissing brake booster on my 9-5. It has what I believe are the usual symptoms where it hisses until you put the slightest pressure on the brake pedal. Braking seems fine though and no vacuum-related CELs. The sound first appeared about a year ago but was very quiet and intermittent, in the last week the sound has reappeared, louder and ever present. Is there any other possible cause? Any checks to verify it's the booster for sure?

RMEuropean has the ATE booster for $185, looks like free shipping.

I have read the write up by Mark in Marine and a few others I've found elsewhere. This looks like a tricky but do-able DIY job (others I've tackled include brakes, rear shocks, coolant BPV, thermostat & sensor, engine mounts, etc) I have a 2-week window of time coming up during which I'll have a fair bit of free time as well as a 2nd car available. My car is a 2003 Aero, stick shift, with ESP. A few questions:

- what is the "disaster potential" of this job? Anything that could go horribly wrong?
- I see two ways to do it - one involves removing the booster by itself by removing the 4 small rear-facing nuts and another to remove the entire bracket, which requires removal of the windsheild wipers, some trim, and the use of different tools to get in there from the top and from below. Any thoughts on which is truly easier?
- I see varying reports on whether brake lines need to be disconnected from the ESP module - is this in fact necessary?
- Should the vacuum line and/or vacuum line grommet be replaced as well?
- Anything else that becomes accessible during the job that I may want to consider replacing preemptively?
- Any tools required or suggested? Have seen recommendations for a 13mm GearWrench type (stubby? flex-head? both?) for the booster-only method and for a Lisle wiper arm puller for the bracket method.
- Any DIY guides out there with photos?

Thanks everybody. This looks like a somewhat tricky job but I'm feeling adventurous given that I can take my sweet time doing it.
