I sometimes long for more modern forum features that this lacks, but the people here are fantastic. Agreed as well on not picking the next car based on a test drive. I'm quite happy with my Saab but I know it won't be a reliable daily driver forever.
My qualifications are that it has to be a wagon as I have a golden retriever and two children, and I don't want the complexity of Audi/VWs 6-cylinder powerplants. The new BMW F30 3 series wagon is interesting, but it's only available here with the 2.0 litre petrol engine and the 8-speed automatic. It's also a smaller wagon than the Saab by nearly 20 cubic feet, but some of that could be compensated for with a large roof box. I drove a rented BMW 120d in England and Scotland for 10 days this past February, and I was quite impressed with that engine. I think I'd put up with the smaller F30 if it were available here with the 2.0 litre diesel and a manual gearbox, getting 65 mpg on the highway has its advantages.
I've thought about the normal Mercedes E-class wagon, but they're more of a luxury car and seem less utilitarian than my Saab.
I may investigate doing a stage II upgrade pretty soon now that I'm out of warranty.
