I just returned from my second Seattle-Chicago-Seattle drive in my '07 Aero SC 60th since August, I got a puppy recently and wanted to bring him along on these two trips as opposed to boarding him.
Friends of mine couldn't understand why I wanted to do this, but they don't have 9-5 Aeros. There aren't too many other vehicles that come to mind that I'd want to drive this many miles in, I had an '04 Volvo V70R manual that would've been quite good at something like this. I think the seats in the Saab are better though, and the Aero doesn't have the electronic disconnect that the Volvo's 4C suspension suffered from.
On the first trip I burned a few quarts of oil - but I think I was overfilling by not reading the dipstick properly. The car was probably also overloaded with gear, I had two kids, a dog, a completely full cargo area and a roof box with another 150 lbs in it. When I returned from the first trip I got an oil change, and on the second trip I've burned .33 of a quart of Mobil 0W-40 in 6.5k miles, which I think is more than acceptable.
I've been quite pleased with the Michelin Pilot Super Sports that I had installed 15k ago, they're holding up quite well and it looks like I'll get another 10-15k out of them. They're incredibly smooth at all speeds, and tracking and at the limit handling are fantastic. I averaged 29mpg for the 2k mile trip east, at speeds from 85-95 (including a few higher stints on very desolate roads in the west, I found my speed limiter is set to 130) - which I think is absolutely fantastic for a car like this. On the way back the temps were much cooler and I averaged 26, I attribute that to an easterly headwind and using sport mode more often.
It's trips like these that make me wish this car would run forever, I can't think of what I'd replace it with if I had to. The combination of speed/handling/braking/ride/cargo/fuel econ is extremely tough to beat.
