The O-ring is actually square in cross-section. Both of these parts are common wear items on higher mileage cars and apparently not hard to replace - with a HUGE set of snap ring pliers. I had my local Indy replace these on my old 9-5 when I noticed during an oil change that the bottom plastic shield was coated with a thick oily goo that wasn't there 5K miles earlier.
