yes you can bypass it completely - search mackay hose - eeuro stocks it so you could probably get one from them in 24 hrs... It is cheap also, about $20. The big issue is the time and effort and if that is worth doing on the road.
If the leak is small you may be just fine for the trip. I think mine has been leaking (no evidence of leak or puddles other than occasional dropping of coolant level) for a couple months now (including the latter half of a 3000 mile trip, and a 600 mile trip after that). I have the hose. Need to get in there and do the repair before it blows...
