As you say, I think the 40K interval was just a way for not having to do the expensive plugs at the free service.

Since the 9-3 Sport Sedan is doing fine with a similar plug going 60K and that the rest of the cars out there are up around 100K intervals by now, 60K is not a bad choice unless you run some crappy gasoline which can kill a plug that is getting long in the tooth.
