So long as there is sufficient CCA, marine battery is actually better than conventional car battery for backup purpose and for a car that is usually parked and driven less frequent than once a week. The usual rule about not connecting batteries of different types refer to difference in chemistry (which would have different terminal voltages). Both conventional car batteries and marine batteries use the same chemistry: lead and acid. The difference is in the thickness of metal plates: car batteries use many thin plates in order to maximize CCA in a small volume/weight, marine batteries have much thicker metal plates to withstand the acid corrosion due to deep discharging. Therefore, so long as the CCA ratings are the same as the conventional auto battery, and it can crank your car on the cold days, the marine battery is actually a more substantial and longer lasting battery (but probably cost more too).
