Both xenon headlights failed while driving at night!!!!

What a scary night! My girlfriend and I were on our way up to VT this evening from CT. Had just gotten quite a ways into VT and was just south of White River Junction about to get on 89 to head to Burlington. Out of no where both my Xenon headlights go out completely. I was driving blind for about 4-5 seconds at 75-80 when luckily I had the thought/impulse to hit the fog light button and both luckily and miraculously lit up. It was pitch black out and there were no other cars on the road. If my fogs didn't light up I don't know what the end result would have been. One of the scariest driving experiences I have ever had!
We made it to Burlington on just fog lights in the right lane at very very slow speeds. My girlfriend had commented earlier how awesome the xenons are on dark mountainous highways... Glad I got to my destination safely but makes me have second thoughts one xenons. There great when they work but too much that can go wrong...
I did notice recently a few times that when I turned the headlight switch off and turned the car off they would stay on? Turned the key back on and cycled the switch and the would go back off? I think it might be related and plan to do some troubleshooting in the morning. Maybe a relay?
Going to troubleshoot in the morning...
