Is it easier to remove the old antenna rather than working with it on the roof? - You'll have to drop the headliner to access the retaining nut. This will leave you with a hole through the roof versus a leaky plug (current antenna) under a sealed cover.

Is that double sided tape an adequate water seal? - mine has seen a lot of wet driving and a few automatic high-pressure car washes with no lifting of the cover. Several others have reported similar seal performance.

Or do I need silicone too? If so, what type? Exterior or just bathroom stuff as it will be protected from UV. Or do I need auto/marine grade? Won't silicone make a potential future replacement tricky as the silicone will bond to the paint? - If you want to silicone around the base of the old antenna, that will provide an additional barrier. You'll have to wait until the silicone cures fully before you apply the cover, as the cover will seal off any out-gassing from the curing silicone. I bought exterior grade black silicone, but opted not to use it. I don't think the silicone will bond that well to the paint, but I don't think you'll ever need to replace it.

Do I need a paint prep solvent to clean the bonding surface or can I wash with Dawn and let it dry? - I just cleaned around the antenna area with a mild soap and made sure it was really dry. Dawn would be fine.

IMHO, the matte look is fine. You could probably sand it and paint it the faux carbon-fiber look bothers you, but in the end, nobody is going to notice except you.

Cheers - JMJ
