There aren't too many child seats around yet that have the LATCH system. I'm glad to hear you're keeping your kid rear-facing. They have to be 21 lbs AND 1 year old for forward facing (before then the neck muscles haven't developed enough).
Britax is a good company, as is Graco. With child seats, we've found (we do compliance crash testing here at work) that higher prices usually mean higher quality (*disclaimer*: the above is not an official endorsement of any particular seat manufacturer. I just feel safer with that lawyer-repellant :) ).
If you can afford it, I'd stick with a strictly rear-facing seat, not a convertible. Kids tend to not fit too well in the convertibles (the seats are too big for small kids). The LATCH basically just makes it more fool-proof to install the seat, but DEFINITELY go to an inspection station and have it checked, with your kid in the seat. They not only check the seat, but how your child fits and is restrained in it.
