From the research I've done before buying the car seat for my 2 year old a year ago, I've learnt that Britax has the highest safety ratings by far. They are also the only company that manufactures car seats (and only car seats), approves for airpplane use.
When you look at car seats, pull off the fabric cover from the hard shell and take a look how the actual seat that will protect your child in case of a crash is constructed. Britax had the most solid construction along with impact-absorbing materials. IMO, it was well worth the ~$200 I spent on the seat (compared with sub $100 available).
However, it is true that kids should be in a rear facing seat until their neck muscles are more developed. This would mean that you'd have to get another seat in a few months. If this is your first child, get used to keeping your wallet open...
