Yet another "What If" item for your parts cabinet Posted by MI-Roger [Email] (#882) [Profile/Gallery] (more from MI-Roger) on Fri, 8 Feb 2013 03:32:16 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
In addition to a spare IDM (not nearly as important as it used to be), a spare Coolant By-Pass Valve, and a spare Crankshaft Position Sensor, I have another item to add to the list. Based upon my recent experiences and those of multiple other owners posting on a varity of Saab owner blog sites, this new item is a spare ignition lock cylinder - keyed to match your car.
The old cylinder from my '08 Aero did not have a dust door on top to keep crud out and neither does its replacement. I am certain my 2000 did have this door, and while a few owners of newer cars report their ignition lock cylinders are so equipped, it appears that nearly all newer cars do not have this penny cost feature and a growing number are experiencing lock cylinder malfunction after a few years of use. I effectively never eat or drink in my car so this can't be blamed on dropped food crumbs or sticky beverage residue.
This cylinder only costs $45 but is a long lead item as it must be custom ordered to match your existing keys. Removal and Replacement is a one minute job requiring only a 3mm hex key or similarly sized piece of stiff bent metal to release the cylinder catch.
I saved my old cylinder so it can be rebuilt and relubed to become my spare in the parts cabinet.
