I suspect heat is the only contributing factor.
I see no failures of the V6 IDM's after installing the TK4.6 version after the TK4.4 have failed, which failed in the same ways as the early black ones did (TK3.4 and TK3.4D) when the smoke was "let out".
The V6 design is a lot smarter in that the whole box containing the electronics sits up away from the valve cover instead of being shoved down into the Hall's of Hell and only the spark plug tubes goes down into the engine.
I think the air circulating around the IDM is just enough to keep the temp down below cooking level of the electronics.
