Since the bulbs for the brakes are combo brake/tail lights, sometimes people will force the bulb into the socket the wrong way. It's usually pretty obvious, as you end up with a really bright taillight that doesn't get a whole lot brighter with the brakes.
The bulb should only go in the socket one way. The locating pins are different heights. If you put the bulb in, and it doesn't turn easily, pull it back out & rotate it 180°.
Other single filament bulbs go in either way.
