A few years ago I replaced the engine in my wifes 2002 9-5 (2.3L) and I was amazed by the ripoff dealers out there. Everyone offers a money back guarantee which isn't saying much when you go through that kind of shipping and installation cost. Check the BBB for complaints if you can't find an engine nearby. It seems about 4/5 sellers just pull engines from wrecks and ship them hoping the engine might actually be usable. After a lot of searching I dealt with a place out of Florida that had several low to high mile used Saab engines including re-manufactured. I bought a 60,000 mile engine and was more than happy with the purchase. The engine had been prepared well when stored, had no signs of sludge or abnormal deposits. It has run perfectly now for about 20,000 miles.
I live in the Chicago metropolitan area and could find nothing locally that checked out at the time. Nothing in Milwaukee either- one place there advertised a low mile 2.3L but when I called and said I wanted to drive up with my truck and inspect before buying it they refused saying "But sir! The shipping is free!" Yeah, right. Click. I found one reputable source in Indiana which I forget the name of, and the place I bought from in Florida I think was called Central Parts. Dropping that kind of $ sight unseen is a nail biter even without the fact that a good used 2.3L fetchs a premium compared to other brand motors due to the sludge failures.
I had considered rebuilding the original (spun crank bearing) but with the effort involved pulling the engine and with its high mileage plus wanting to keep the car as long as possible, buying a low mile used engine made more sense to me.
