What got damaged, and where is almost always irrelevant in determining if the vehicle is a "write-off". The only thing the insurance companies care about is the amount of money they have to pay out. Their ideal is to pay out the least money.
So, if your car us valued at $8,000, and the damage is $4,000, it is in the better interest of the insurance company to pay to repair the car. OTOH, if the car is valued at $4,000, and the damage totals $5,000 to repair, they will pay you the lesser amount, and take the car.
There is also a percentage involved, as in if the repair total comes within X% of the value (but not over) the car may be considered a "total loss" because once the Ins. co says "fix it", any cost overruns are on them.
If they cover the repair, you should push for OE quality parts, and that they cover everything. If they pay you the value of the car, make sure you get the fair market **retail** price. Double-check that they know it is an Aero, which os worth more than a Linear or Arc.
There are risks in buying a totaled car back from an ins. co. First, the car will probably receive a "salvage title". This will very often prevent you from buying "collision" coverage (damage to your car due to a collision) or "comprehensive" coverage (damage to your car from other than a collision). Also, if someone else were to hit your car again, the other ins. co. may not pay you anything for the loss.
This is based on US insurance. Canada may be different...
