2001 Wagon - 2.3 LPT - Oil light flickered.....long.... Posted by vsfoxe [Email] (#1025) [Profile/Gallery] (more from vsfoxe) on Thu, 30 May 2013 12:05:45 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Plenty of oil, engine knocks now (163,000 miles). This car was bought for grand daughter to drive. Removed oil pan during preparation, very little sludge, cleaned screen (no new O-ring), thought we were OK. Using Synthetic oil, 5,000 mile oil & filter changes. Read a LOT on this website - I'm usually on the C900 forum. Removed valve cover, some flaky sludge on timing chain end wall, oil was getting to both camshafts. Removed spark plugs - they look great. With pistons about 1/2 way up, #4 piston has a lot more slap than the other 3, so I guess its the normal (?) oil delivery failure to #4? Removed oil pan, and can catch a fingernail in the #4 cylinder wall. Choices: Sell car; find a used engine; Repair current engine with used piston; ??????. Questions:
(1) Anyone experienced at repairing these 2.3 LPT engines with used parts?
(2) Can cylinder wall be honed & cross-hatched satisfactorily with engine in car?
(3) Do "used" pistons from cyl. #1 or 2 usually work out okay?
(4) Do I simply reuse the rings from the used piston, or do I buy a new set and grind the end gaps to specs?
(5) If SLUDGE caused this, where have I got to remove existing sludge FROM to prevent reoccurrence?
(6) New gaskets and anaerobic sealant would be used.
(7) Is fixing the engine stupid? I've never worked on Saab engine internals before, but we can do that and I have the tools. Help!
