while the old one is 13.7K Ohms, measured with my best DVM, a Fluke 179, at 67 degrees F. So the CPS is clearly bad; likey the fine copper wire has an impending break that gets worse as it heats up. Indeed, a few seconds with a heat gun got it up to almost a megohm. Then after cooling, it would return to ~14K Ohms, still an order of magnitude greater than it should be.
The car starts reliably and the MPG has improved. Again, thanks to all. The writeup from andym was especially helpful; much more detailed than either Haynes or WIS. Getting the O2 sensor out of the way makes it possible, yet still difficult to access the CPS and it's cover. I used blue tape holding the bit in the screw head and a small tyrap holding the shield to the torks bit to get the screw started.
