Yes, you can use one of the later HomeLink mirrors. The 9-3SS HomeLink mirror is the same, so that makes it easier to find a used one. The HomeLink mirror is a direct plug-in if the car is a 2003 9-5 or later. For some strange reason, on my 2002 with just an autodimming mirror, the plugs were reversed. That means the original mirror had the 8-pin female plug instead of a male plug. I cut the plug off the existing autodimming mirror and spliced it onto the mirror cable so that it would match the chassis plug. I suspect your 2001 would have the same problem
I swapped out an autodimmming mirror on my 2002 9-5 with a HomeLink autodimming mirror from a 2004 9-3SS. After you mount the mirror (after straightening out plug mismatch) download the owner's manual from 2003 9-5, which has the programming instructions for the compass and HomeLink. I bought 3 of the HomeLink mirrors of the auction site over a period of time to put in my three cars (2005 9-3SS, 2002 9-5 Aero and 1999 9-5) at an average cost of $70 each (two lower, one higher). On the 1999 there was no existing plug for the mirror, so I found a 12V circuit that was switched on/off with the ignition and tapped into that. The circuit was either from the sun visor mirror lights or from the sun roof. Don't remember which one.
On the 2005 9-3SS, I just pluged in the used mirror. It was nice to able to toss the remotes into a cabinet in the garage.
I MAY have my old mirror, with the plug cut off, if you want to move over the plug from your current mirror, or try swapping the guts. Let me know and I'll look for it.
