There was a huge discussion about the new Dexos standard awhile back on this and the 9-3SS board, and the general conclusion was that many oils in Dexos-1 list were inadequate for the Saab/GM turbocharged engines that used an extended change interval.

I personally feel queasy about putting any semi-synthetic oil in my cars as I expect to run them to at least 200K miles and it does make a difference over the long run. However, the oils in the Dexos-2 list were the familiar high quality oils, like Mobil-1 0W-40 and Castol Syntec 0w-30, that we were comfortable using in our cars.

Perhaps your friend can convice his dealer to use Dexos-2?
