A fuel pump failure story that can't be beat.. Last year in my 2003 Linear (at 131k miles) we (me, wife, 1 year old) were coasting down the Queenston-Lewiston bridge toward the Canadian customs booths. If you've been to this border crossing you'll remember that the bridge gives way to a huge fanning of lanes with as many as 15 booths open.
I didn't give it gas as I was coasting..but then suddenly, the engine cuts out. I start it again, while coasting...no start...and again....no start...still coasting... I stop in front 6 feet short of the stop sign for an open customs booth.
Uh oh. Try to start it again, nothing. Car has never died on me before, even DIC gave SID warning! Parental advice to get a new SUV "because we have a son now and can't take chances" runs through my mind...
DO I get out of the car? Is that ok? Or will they draw arms - I don't think the Canadian border officers carry them though, thankfully.
So I get out of the car and walk toward the booth with a "oh man my car died face"... I'm thinking this is too weird for them to even be suspicious. I tell the officer what happened. "He says did you try giving it gas?" I did. "Maybe it's flooded." He mentions that it probably is the starter or fuel pump. I ask, "can I call CAA?! "You can't he says" and tells me that area in front of the booth is either no-mands land or the USA or both (don't remember the wording) - in any event tow trucks are only allowed on the other side of the customs booth.
"How do I get it over?" I ask. I'm thinking I'm not going back over that bridge to get stranded in Niagara Falls, NY. Officer gets out of the booth, and says "we'll push you over". Two customs officers get behind and push my car into the customs booth with me in it. Surreal. Then one of the officers gets back into the booth, and proceeds as if nothing happened. "Citizenship? Where are you going? " (I'm thinking nowhere fast...) "Any alcohol or tobacco?" Now I'm cleared, but can't go anywhere.
He calls the Canada customs utility van and these guys swing by and are able to push me but only about 50 feet out of the way. That's as far as they can push me. It was almost as if that is their range of action. I'm on the LEFT side of the road, in a little bit of awkward position... it would have been much better being in the "further inspection" parking lot which is 200feet on the right.
It's now 11:30pm at night. My wife is worried cause it's getting cold and we have our 13 month old in the car. We wrap up. I call CAA and they mention it will be a 45 minute wait. We wait it out.
The story would not be complete without mentioning that my son's first word was bus and he could say bulldozer at his first birthday. So it was to a bleery eyed 1 year olds amazement when a huge flatbed tow truck with circling red lights swings over to get the Saab. He watches from the side of the road, bundled up in his mom's arms as the Saab gets tugged and lifted up onto the flat bed. And not only that, he gets to jump into this bus/bulldozer hybrid with and go for a ride. I know for a fact that he said "I'm in the truck. I'm in the truck" when we started driving...
Summary: My advice get http://www.eeuroparts.com/Parts/43311/Fuel-Pump-Assembly-TU301/ and save yourself from a silent failure in parts unknown!
