In my mind, the fuel pump is the scourge of high mileage cars. Almost every other failure is preventable (change those pulleys) or gives warning (water pump weeping?). But the fuel pump confounds me.
Some last seemingly forever, some die at a young age. They don't give much of a warning, and if they do it's so non-descript that it could be anything.
I am wondering if fuel pump death can be predicted. I periodically monitor the current draw of the pump in both cars using an oscilloscope and current clamp. It's just an experiment and I dont know if I will learn anything from it.
About a year ago I noticed a change in the current draw signature of one of my Aeros. I decided to run it until it dies, just to see. So far, over a year and over 10k miles it has not died.
it *has* started to show some "bucking" under hard acceleration. But again, that not hard evidence and it's due for plugs anyway ...
But ... replace fuel pump as a maintenance item? I started my experiment back when the replacement part was upwards of $450. But now the Walbro pump itself can be had for ~100 and the whole assembly is ~200. It's starting to look like preemptive replacement is a good idea.
