Well there are a finite number of shifts in an auto box - but let's say a car spends most of it's time in city driving - then it likely will fail much earlier than a car with a lot of highway miles - where little shifting occurs. Keeping the fluid reasonably clean will help to lessen the wear of the clutches from the shifting process .
But making a statement that most fail at 120k miles just doesn't add up as folks on here have advised. I sold my 1999 with 170k miles and the transmission never had any issues whatsoever.
