Seems wrong to me. The alternator may have been re-built improperly or your mechanic isn't very thorough. Since your mechanic did this, you should ask him (or another qualified mechanic, nothing wrong with a second opinion) to check grounding wires, positive battery cable, etc. basically anything that has to do with SAAB electrical system.
Go to another supplier of alternators and another mechanic and see if this changes the outcome. Good suppliers and mechanics give warranties that extend past an oil change for parts and labor. Look into site sponsors and the list of mechanics on SAABNET.
