Over New Year I had 3 no starts towed in, One was a CPS, one was a fuel pump and the third was an IDM. the latter was the first IDM no start I have seen since about 2001 or when Saab did the recall. The IDM has 2 separate functions; firing the coils and monitoring the combustion. The combustion monitoring circuits tell T7ecm which cyl. just fired (cam sensor function) so it can open the correct fuel injector and also monitor for precombustion thus controlling max. spark advance and turbo. boost. When these circuits malfuction you get codes 1312 (cyl. 1-2) and/or 1334 (cyl. 3-4). Malfunction and codes tend to be intermittant, hence the CEL comes on and goes away but as age increases so does the malfunction severity, usually leading to a code p0340 before coil circuit failure. Almost always there is a crack in the plastic cover between cyl 3 and 4 coils. 9-3SS don't have this problem since these circuits are in a separate module mounted to the vac. pump which is a much cooler location.
