A tech friend that runs a shop says that the biggest reason for evaporator failure is ice that builds up during or just after shut-down. Sudden temperature swings result in cracking in of the evaporator. He recommends shutting the AC off (Econ mode) about a minute or two before actually shutting the engine off at your destination. This can double or triple the life of the evaporator. A bigger concern is winter road salt attacking the AC condensor that lives in front of the radiator. I've done three of four of them.
Lots of posts on this board indicate the life of the Direct Ignition Cassette to be 60,000 - 80,000 miles. If it hasn't been changed, it will be soon. Budget about $400.
An alternator and / or starter rebuild may be in the cards prior to 200,000 miles. Figure $150 - $200 for each if you remove the item yourself.
