I think the general consensus is that the 9-5 is a better built car with more SAAB characteristics, but the 9-3ss (as opposed to og9-3 which has most of the failings of the 9-5 and a few additional) is a more reliable car - fewer things go wrong mechanically. The only thing is it is even more integrated and electronic so you need access to parts and tech2. Minor things annoy me about the 9-3, like window switches on the arm rest rather than in the center console etc. Dash peeling/button lables rub off etc, at least on earlier models. More of a GM product. But still a great car with a saab feel.
finding a 9-3X may be a challenge. They are definitely a bit taller, but space will not necessarily be as big as you're used to if you have a 9-5 wagon.
