John,
We looked at the CX-5, but there were a few things my wife (principal driver of our 9-5 and ultimate decider of it's replacement) didn't like, e.g. no power tailgate and not enough power. She did like the seats, which got Venza, BMW X1 and X3 thrown off of our list, now down to 2014 Acura RDX tech FWD vs. 2015 Volvo XC60 T6 DRIVE-E FWD. I agree with you on no AWD.
I think the CX-5 is a strong leader in it's class (CRX, RAV4, venza, etc.)
+ skyactive 2.5L inline 4 that makes 184 HP without forced induction and runs on regular gas with 13:1 compression (i think the standard shift is only available with a much smaller engine, but a 6speed auto wouldn't be too bad; they don't offer paddle shifters)
+ Excellent gas mileage 32MPG Hwy (FWD)
+ Excellent ratings from Consumer Reports..the Annual Auto issue just came out
+ only weighs 3375 LBs (FWD)
+ 0.33 drag coefficient
+ Most amenities of the 9-5 available in the top line
+ Comparable to 9-5 passenger and cargo room
- Roads tests say it has a lot of road noise and a choppy ride
- Small gas tank (14.8 gal)
- 0-60 in 8.0 seconds (AWD) vs. 6.6 for the 2004 9-5 Aero
We had a 1983 Mazda 626 5 door, which was a great car and several relatives have had good luck with later Mazdas. Too bad they don't make a Mazda 6 wagon or hatchback. The CX-9 is too big for us.
Go drive a CX-5! Good luck and let us know what you decide.
