Roger, you did well. The isopropyl alcohol is your best choice - the compromise between not hurting the paint, evaporation rate, and mixing with the water.
I had the same problem earlier this season - I suspect that the solutions are not as carefully metered as they ought to be. And once frozen, the ice is fairly pure water - it excludes the additives - and it took my 2005 getting up to about 15 above before the system worked properly so I could flush it out.
