Could be that your brake booster is going bad and what you hear is a slight vacuum hiss. Is the engine running when it happens?
Try to push the brake pedal sideways in both direction while slowly moving it up and down to see if you can alter the sound and maybe make it stay on.
If the engine is running (or recently shut off) when you suck in the brake pipe, you would have to overcome the vacuum that engine is producing and is stored in the booster.
If you bleed off all vacuum in booster, you should be able to do the test.
