"Modern Oils" are specifically designed to be more sludge resistant than older formulas as a result of manufacturers requesting more stringent standards in the newer oil specifications.
As for the question at hand - synthetic oil and better PCV help reduce sludge but do not prevent it. The cause is products of combustion getting into the oil and maximum oil temperatures. The way to prevent sludge is to change the oil before the additives that deal with the products of combustion are used up. Synthetic oil, due to its higher price point, tends to also have a more robust additive package than (lower priced) conventional oil. The molecular structure of the base oil is a lot more uniform with synthetics than with conventional oils, which helps in a lot of other ways (better lubrication, lower volatility, viscosity grade stability), but sludge prevention is not a major benefit, IMO (that is, the contribution from the synthetic base oil, not the more robust additive package). Rather, someone who spends the extra to use synthetic oil is more likely to take care to change more frequently as well.
