A/C Evaporator leak Posted by pme [Email] (#1496) [Profile/Gallery] (more from pme) on Mon, 7 Apr 2014 12:56:51 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Last summer, I changed my cabin filter and noticed a small amount of the fluorescent dye from the AC system on the top edge of the filter. Everything still worked fine, so I let the small leak be.
Now, I am noticing that I need to evacuate and recharge the system -- over the course of our wet spring, I have noticed that the defroster doesn't defog as effectively, the condensation under the car is pretty non-existent, and over this weekend, the car never really cooled down after parking for hours in the sun.
So, I see a few options and am looking for opinions:
Do I,
* Do the AC service, and see how things turn out (barring evidence of a larger, more accessible leak)?
* Is there an effective and non-harmful "Bars Leak"-type product for AC systems that might take care of the leak in the evaporator?
* Or just bite the bullet and replace the evaporator (and I guess any other part that had to be removed as part of that process)? I can probably source the parts, but does anyone have sense of the labor time? I don't have a WIS.
216K miles, 2003 Arc (V-6). Otherwise running great and I expect to hang onto the car for a few more years.
I leave in Metropolitan NYC - so AC is definitely a nice-to-have in July and August, but for my money its most useful when trying to keep the windows clear in the winter after picking up a car load of swimmers or volley/basketball players after practice!
All thoughts welcome.
Thanks
