The problem with treating this as a statistical exercise is that we don't take into account the pain and aggravation of dealing with the repair when it happens unexpectedly. The intrusion on your life style, or personality type, can not be overlooked.
If you choose to "wait it out", will you continually obsess, and wonder when will it fail, perhaps preventing you from taking longer trips in the car.. as you wait for the inevitable? Or are you the type that says, no worries, I'll worry about it when the time comes? I think that has to weigh heavily into the decision....
From a practicality point.. the fact that you've raised this question tells me you're seriously thinking about it, in which case.. what are you really saving by not doing it.. if you're worrying about it before it's failed? On the back end, if it last's another 10 or 20K miles.. what does that really buy you? Does it mean that mean you won't have to deal with the next replacement until 300K rather than 280K miles, if you squeeze this one out?
I guess my thinking would be .. if you plan on keeping the car for a while, and this is in your head... then swap it out now.. Otherwise if you're thinking about selling the car in another year or two.. then I would roll the dice, as its running fine.. and as others have said.. the variables involved are far too many to give you any level of certainty as to when it will fail..
I do love the analysis, and totally admire you're thinking on this !!
