I find it easier to pop the SID out directly. You just need to be careful and use a proper tool (or at least a suitable tool). A proper tool would be something like this:

I dont have that, but I use an avocado knife with great success, like this: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004WG0TQI/ref=as_li_tf_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=B004WG0TQI&linkCode=as2&tag=thesaabnetwork
Maybe careful use of a butter knife would do as well. But not a screwdriver, never a screwdriver.
You want something flat and wide. And if you are prone to scratching (and i'm afraid it sounds like you are) use painters tape on the dash where you will be prying.
with a suitable prying tool you can just pry up one corner of the SID a bit, and the the opposite corner and it will pop out.
As far as your radio, I had similar trouble on one of my Aeros. Turned out that the cage was bent and locked the unit in place. I had to remove the cage and radio as one piece. once the whole thing was out I could unbend the cage and removal of the radio alone was "normal" after that.
