Your idea has some merit from an airflow point of view but new filters create airflow that smells better. Old cabin filters get filled with all sorts of detritus including molds, bacteria and viruses, spores, microscopic tire particles, dirt and decaying plant matter. This cornucopia of matter can get gross. Regional difference can be huge. Arizona might be well-served by that approach. Shake the sand out and you are ready to go.....
