You said motor/transmission mounts are intact, but I just replaced 3 of the 4 (left back one in) on 2005 Arc - the passenger side was about an inch shorter than new, and the "upper" trans mount was about 3/4 inch shorter - and the engine not only feels smoother at idle, but the throttle response and shifts are crisper. So at 161K miles I would do those.
Our car has 127K miles, and I had noticed a little smoke on startup a couple of times, so I rebuilt the turbo center section with parts from Swedish Dynamics (site sponsor). I know TD04'a are supposed to be lifetime, but the previous owner had done some extended oil (9K miles) oil changes and for whatever reason, the exhaust (turbine side) oil seal was very gunked up and carbonized. I think I got it in time - dropped the pan and saw almost no carbon (screen was pristine).
I am not a master mechanic, but you might have more than one contributing factor.
